Gyavira MUSHIZI
Full Professor (UPN) — former Rector of UOB and ULGL
Born in Bukavu (South Kivu) on 8 August 1966, Professor Mushizi Barhageranya Gyavira pursued an academic path in philosophy: a Baccalaureatus at the Saint Peter Canisius Institute (affiliated with the Gregorian University of Rome), a Licence at the Saint Peter Canisius Faculty of Philosophy (now Loyola University of Congo), a Graduate Diploma at the Catholic Faculties of Kinshasa (now the Catholic University of Congo), and then a PhD in Philosophy obtained in 2005 through a cooperation between the Catholic Faculties of Kinshasa and the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, with great distinction. His dissertation examined the concept of social justice in the work of Emmanuel Levinas.
Associate Professor in 2008, Professor in 2015, then Full Professor in 2019 at the Official University of Bukavu (UOB), he has been a full-time member of the National Pedagogical University (UPN), in the Department of Philosophy and Management, since 2021. He has held several academic leadership positions: Rector of the Official University of Bukavu (2016-2018), Rector of the Free University of the Great Lakes (2018-2019), Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (UOB, 2007-2009), as well as academic and administrative secretary-general positions at ISDR/Bukavu.
On the sociopolitical front, he has served as an electoral trainer for the Independent Electoral Commission, communications advisor to the Governor of South Kivu, coordinator of the province’s Studies Bureau, academic advisor to the Ministry of Higher and University Education, chief of staff for several ministers (Water Resources and Electricity; Culture, Arts and Heritage), Director-General of the National Archives Institute of Congo (INACO), and assistant to the Director-General of the Great Lakes Desk at the Presidency of the Republic.
A researcher in African studies, he is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Research and Documentation on African Traditions and Languages (CERDOTOLA, YaoundĂ©) on behalf of the DRC, and a member of the Philosophical Society of Congo (SOPHICO). He is the author of several books and scientific articles, notably on the thought of Emmanuel Levinas, ecology drawing on the encyclical Laudato Si’, and public governance in the DRC.
